My daughter Kodie was in the third grade when a police helicopter flew low over her elementary school — not for an emergency, but for a special demonstration. The officers were there to show the kids how a trained K9 unit worked. Strapped to one of the officers was a German Shepherd. Kodie watched in awe as the helicopter landed, the officer and his dog leapt out, and the German Shepherd raced across the field to take down a "bad guy" in a real-world demonstration of law enforcement training. That moment sparked something deep in her — a love for German Shepherds that would never leave.
From that day forward, she was hooked. But as her mom, I wasn’t on board with having dogs. I told her, “If you want a German Shepherd, you’ll have to buy it yourself.”
And wouldn’t you know it — she did.
One weekend at a barrel race, she won a good bit of money. At lunchtime, she and her dad disappeared. I looked everywhere, and just before the show started back up, she came walking up with a big smile and an even bigger bundle of fur in her arms.
A German Shepherd puppy. His name was Christian.
Christian’s Guardian Shepherds didn’t begin with a business plan — it began with a moment. A spark placed in a third grader’s heart by something unforgettable.
Christian didn’t come from health-tested parents, nor was he from champion bloodlines. But Kodie didn’t care. She loved that dog with her whole heart. She trained him, slept beside him, and dreamed of one day starting a breeding program with him.
But God had a different plan.
Christian suffered a tragic accident and had to be euthanized while still very young. He never got the chance to sire a litter. Kodie was heartbroken, entering a season of grief and discouragement.
Wanting to lift her spirits, her father and I reached out to a breeder just outside Nashville, Tennessee. We brought home a new puppy — a strong, confident, and beautiful boy who would become the foundation of our program. His name was Goliath.
A powerful 125-pound male with incredible temperament and structure, Goliath became our first sire and the cornerstone of Christian’s Guardian Shepherds.
As Kodie began searching for females to pair with Goliath, she ran into some hard lessons. Several big-time breeders told her Goliath wasn’t good enough — dismissing her and her dog in ways that stung deeply.
But those moments, painful as they were, shaped her. She didn’t quit. Instead, she got curious. She dove into learning everything she could — about pedigrees, conformation, structure, and, most importantly, health testing.
She discovered that health testing isn’t just important — it’s the foundation of any responsible breeding program. Through time, experience, and a whole lot of heart, Kodie grew into the phenomenal, grounded breeder she is today — one who puts the well-being of her dogs and the integrity of her program first in everything she does.
When Goliath's first litter arrived, I told Kodie it was time to name her breeding program. She didn’t hesitate:
“Christians Guardian Shepherds,” she said. “Because I know Christian is still guarding me from heaven — just like a little angel.”
And from that moment, the name stuck.
Christians Guardian Shepherds was built on faith, family, and the unshakable bond between a third grader and her dog. We are a family-owned, Christian-based German Shepherd breeding program, committed to raising dogs that are as sound in mind and body as they are loyal in heart.
Our breeding dogs are carefully selected and imported from world-class bloodlines. Every puppy is raised right here on our farm — handled daily, socialized early, and loved deeply. These are not just dogs — they are guardians, companions, and part of a bigger purpose.
